TikTok is launching its first feature that uses AI to turn images into videos, the company announced on Tuesday. The new feature is called “TikTok AI Alive” and allows users to turn photos into videos within TikTok Stories.
You can only access this feature through TikTok’s Story Camera. It uses AI to create short videos with “movement, atmospheric, and creative effects,” according to TikTok.
For example, if your static photo shows the sky, clouds, and ocean, TikTok can turn it into a video. In the video, the sky changes color, the clouds move, and you hear waves crashing. Another option is to create a group selfie that shows different gestures and expressions.
The new image-to-video features were released a few years after TikTok introduced an in-app text-to-image AI generator. While Instagram and Snapchat also have text-to-image AI features for creators, TikTok is taking it a step further by letting users make videos from images. It’s worth mentioning that Snapchat has said it will soon allow creators to make AI videos from images.
Stories created with AI will have a label that tells users. Plus, this content will have C2PA metadata embedded, which is a technical standard that helps others identify that the video is AI-generated, even if it’s downloaded and shared beyond TikTok.
TikTok wrote in a blog post that they always build with safety in mind, and that this is also true for their AI innovations. “This technology allows people to express themselves in new ways, so we do a lot of checks to keep our community safe. We use technology to review uploaded photos and written prompts for AI-generated content. We also review AI-generated videos before they are shown to the creator. This helps prevent people from creating content that violates our policies.
TikTok says that people can report videos that they think break the app’s rules. The app also does a final safety check once a creator shares an AI Alive story.
To create an AI Alive video, creators just need to open the Story Camera and tap the blue plus button on the top of the Inbox page or Profile page. Then, you can choose a photo from your Story Album. You will then see the AI Alive icon on the right side of the toolbar on the photo edit page.
